7 Film Festivals so far: Award Winning Children’s Short Film “Chhoti Baarish (Little Rain)” by Ritopriyo Saha to be screened at Bangalore Shorts Film Festival (BSFF-25) on 22nd June 2025

By: Get News

“Chhoti Baarish” was born from a simple yet profound moment — a child in a slum gazing longingly at falling raindrops, hesitant to embrace the downpour. This fleeting scene inspired a film exploring the theme of lost innocence and how societal norms often suppress our instinct to express joy freely. It poses a powerful question: when did we forget how to live uninhibitedly?

The journey of making the film was fraught with challenges, particularly due to its reliance on natural weather. Rain never arrived when needed, and sunlight often eluded crucial shots, causing the two-day shoot to stretch into four and the budget to nearly double. Editing the music sequence was equally demanding. Composer Saikat, who also edited the film, used over 100 carefully timed clips to sync with a five-minute original track.

As with many independent projects, funding was a major hurdle. However, the filmmaker was fortunate to have access to exceptional, passionate talent — from a skilled cinematographer to seasoned theatre actors from Bangalore — many of whom worked with minimal or no pay. The film took nearly two years to complete, relying on a balance of limited resources and ample time.

Despite the constraints, the film has achieved significant recognition, being selected at festivals such as Balinale, Jaipur International Film Festival, and Dadasaheb Phalke International Film Festival. The director attributes this success to meticulous pre-production planning and a strong script, emphasizing that thoughtful preparation is key to realizing a creative vision.

At its core, Chhoti Baarish celebrates small, beautiful moments of joy within ordinary life — a universal theme that resonates across cultures and ages, touching both children and adults alike.

Film Pitch Summary – Ritopriyo Saha (within 1000 words)

Hello Bangalore Shorts Film Fest delegates and industry professionals. I’m Ritopriyo Saha, writer-director of Chhoti Baarish, screening at BSFF-25 on 22nd June at Hotel Tulip Inn. I’d like to take this opportunity to share my journey as an artist, and present three original, high-concept feature film projects that I’m developing, ready for collaboration, financing, and production.

Personal & Artistic Journey

Originally from Kolkata, the vibrant cultural capital of India, my artistic journey began in the early 2000s as a visual artist. I later founded Trippink, a Tattoo, Art & Music Studio in Koramangala, Bangalore. What started as a studio has now grown into a thriving, inclusive community of 1000+ diverse artists who meet, jam, and perform together weekly.

My artistic explorations have spanned painting, sculpture, theatre, writing, and music. I write theatre & film scripts, short stories, and poetry, and compose original instrumental music on piano. These creative passions led me naturally into independent filmmaking — telling compelling, emotionally rooted stories with a distinct visual language.

My short films have received international recognition, including official selections at:

  • BALINALE 2025 (Bali International Film Festival, Indonesia)
  • Jaipur International Film Festival 2025
  • Dadasaheb Phalke International Film Festival 2025
  • And others.

My work and vision have also been featured in Times of India, which covered my progressive outlook on performance art.

Feature Film Projects – Original & Market-Ready

At the Bangalore Shorts Film Festival’s film market, I’m pitching three original feature film scripts. Each one is high-concept yet rooted in deep emotional and social themes. All three can also be adapted into short films depending on budget and production scope.

1. MOH MAYA MUKTI

Genre: Action Adventure Fantasy

Visual Style: Dark, Musical, Anime-Infused

Core Theme: Migration, loss of roots, and material illusion

Logline:

A warrior girl named Maya journeys through a mystical forest, battling inner and outer demons in pursuit of freedom and enlightenment. Her quest is an allegory for the migrant experience — the sacrifices made in search of a better life and the loss of identity that follows.

Key Inspirations:

  • Dancer in the Dark by Lars von Trier
  • Emilia Perez by Jacques Audiard
  • Climax by Gaspar Noé

Why It Works:

  • Visually rich and globally appealing as a fantasy-musical.
  • Metaphors for migration and materialism resonate universally.
  • Potential for global festivals, multi-platform extensions (merch, animation, spin-offs).

2. TEEN YAARI (Three Wild Kids)

Genre: Coming-of-Age Drama

Style: Realist, emotionally grounded, poetic

Core Theme: Teenage rebellion, friendship, vulnerability

Logline:

Three emotionally scarred teenagers escape their troubled home lives in a remote village, embarking on a chaotic journey toward a big city where they find both peril and purpose in each other’s company.

Inspirations:

  • Works of Abbas Kiarostami, Asghar Farhadi, and Jafar Panahi

Why It Works:

  • Universally relatable themes of adolescence and emotional resilience.
  • Nostalgic yet socially relevant — ideal for family, youth, and OTT audiences.
  • Realistic storytelling with visual and emotional appeal across geographies.

3. MAY I LOVE U?

Genre: Sci-Fi Romance Drama

Style: Emotional, contemporary, speculative

Core Theme: Loneliness, motherhood, human-AI intimacy

Logline:

A lonely single mother, struggling with a rebellious teenage daughter, finds unexpected comfort and love in an AI humanoid who looks and behaves exactly like a human. As the lines blur between emotion and programming, she is forced to confront the fragility of connection in a digital age.

Inspirations:

  • Her (Spike Jonze)
  • Black Mirror series

Why It Works:

  • A timely exploration of tech-driven relationships and emotional isolation.
  • Strong emotional resonance with wide appeal across demographics.
  • OTT-ready concept with global potential in Sci-Fi romance drama niche.

Vision, Funding & Collaboration Goals

For these projects, I am seeking:

  • Independent producers and financiers with a working budget of ₹1 crore (approx. $120K) for one complete, high-quality feature film including PR and distribution.
  • Creative producers and executive producers who can support with budgeting, ROI planning, and industry connections.
  • Collaborators who believe in original, emotionally gripping, globally relevant Indian stories.

All three scripts are complete and market-ready. I'm open to co-productions, creative partnerships, and adapting these concepts into series or short formats, depending on market needs and funding opportunities.
