Specialty-Driven EHRs Repeat Top 2022 Physician Satisfaction Ratings, 12th Annual Black Book Ambulatory Practice Surveys

Seventy-six percent of independent specialists agree that specialist-specific EHRs will position them best for value-based reimbursement

TAMPA, Fla. - March 8, 2022 - (Newswire.com)

Eight in 10 independent physician specialty practices have again affirmed their confidence in specialty-distinctive electronic health record systems. Sixty-two percent of the 15,947 specialist practices surveyed by Black Book™ in 2022 confirm the continued trend in physician technology replacements on medical and surgical specialty-driven EHRs with integrated RCM, interoperability, and analytics.

Black Book's 2022 user surveys encompassed electronic health records, revenue cycle and practice management, telehealth, interoperability, patient engagement and analytics.

Practices that see a high volume of finite diagnoses have significantly benefited from the templates offered to support a more disparate cross-section of patients who require more individualized documentation according to 90% of all specialists surveyed.

Robust multi-use EHRs with well-constructed specialty modules receive the highest user satisfaction, as the more detailed aspects of fourth-generation usability come into play and provider connectivity issues persist with health systems.

Twelve percent of specialist practices utilizing their first EMR system have decided to rectify chronic system issues by the end of 2023 with flexible cloud-based and specialty-driven EHRs tailored to improve financial, workflow, clinical outcomes and satisfaction.

EHR replacements within the last six years by specialists have been fueled by significant workflow and productivity complications that left little or no time for physicians to customize their generic, multi-use EHR, according to 95% of surveyed respondents, while 40% of specialists still complain over the lack of interoperability with many major medical centers and health systems where they refer patients but do not have admitting privileges, an increase from 2021.

"Purchasing a specialty-driven system, whether engineered only for a single specialty or by a major EHR/HIT vendor, was the most effectual path to resolve ultra-specific functions, quality reporting needs, and produce VBC reimbursement support," said Doug Brown, Managing Partner of Black Book.

Improvements in web-based EHRs including implementations, updates, usability, connectivity, and customization have reversed overall EHR satisfaction of physicians from barely 13% meeting or exceed expectations in 2012 to 92% overall contented specialty-driven EHR users in Q1 2022.

Lack of interoperability with other providers, particularly inpatient facilities, continues to be an apprehension for 84% out-of-network specialist physicians who are not part of an integrated delivery network.
