However, NHTSA data reveals it was involved in just over 5,000 fatal crashes in the studied period, which may give some buyers pause when considering it for their next purchase. However, their alternative choices may not fare much better in that respect — the data also shows that the Toyota Camry and Honda Civic are also among the 20 deadliest vehicles in the United States.
Mullen & Mullen clarifies, “The Honda Accord’s deadliness isn’t too far ahead of the Toyota Camry’s, however. Accords had about .65 occupants killed per crash, compared to the Camry’s .59 rate.” Sedans show a far higher likelihood to be involved in a fatal car crash in the NHTSA’s data, particularly if they were made between 2003 - 2008. Following this period, safety standards took a dramatic change for the better, and this is reflected in the fact that successive years show these vehicles being involved in fewer fatal accidents.
On the other hand, many will already know that motorcycle accidents have an incredibly high likelihood of ending in the loss of life. However, they may not be aware of just how likely this is — NHTSA data shows that either the driver or passenger of a motorcycle will die in almost every crash as the fatality rate here is .98. Fortunately, there is one type of vehicle that is known to be the safest: the minivan. According to the data, these vehicles have the lowest number of fatalities per crash of all vehicle types at .51.
