The James M. Dixon Foundation unveils new community-driven programs aimed at enhancing Alzheimer's care, with a focus on underserved families and equitable support in 2025.
-- The James M. Dixon Foundation for Alzheimer's Research and Support, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of families affected by Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD), is proud to announce a series of new initiatives set to launch in 2025. These groundbreaking programs will address the critical needs of caregivers, patients, and communities, particularly those from underserved and underrepresented backgrounds. With a focus on equity, cultural sensitivity, and community-based solutions, these initiatives aim to transform the caregiving experience and create lasting change.
Introduction of New Programs in 2025
The Foundation’s commitment to providing practical and accessible support for those affected by Alzheimer's disease continues to grow. In 2025, the James M. Dixon Foundation will introduce several new programs designed to empower caregivers and enhance quality of life for seniors with Alzheimer’s disease. Among these is the highly anticipated Dental Day, a new initiative that will connect local dentists with caregivers and seniors for essential dental care. This program will not only provide necessary cleanings and exams, but it will also give caregivers a much-needed break during appointments.
Additionally, the Foundation is launching the Youth Caregiver Project, which will provide education, support, and peer connections to younger caregivers who often face unique challenges. Through workshops and resources, the project will highlight the often-overlooked contributions of younger caregivers and offer them the tools they need to navigate their caregiving journey.
“We understand that caregiving can be a full-time job, and we’re committed to supporting those who provide that care,” says Dr. Lori-Renee Dixon James, Founder and President of the James M. Dixon Foundation. “These new programs are designed to provide both practical help and emotional support to caregivers, helping them feel empowered and supported.”
Strengthening Community Care through Innovation
As part of its mission to provide community-driven solutions, the James M. Dixon Foundation continues to expand its signature programs. The Daddy’s Closet initiative, which provides essential hygiene and personal care items to seniors, has seen an incredible response. It alleviates the financial burden on caregivers and ensures that seniors living with Alzheimer’s have access to the resources they need.
In addition, the Intentional Caregiver Retreat and Intentional Caregiver Workshop Series, which will continue in 2025, provide caregivers with valuable tools, strategies for self-care, and emotional support. These programs offer a space for caregivers to connect with others facing similar challenges, creating a supportive community where they can share experiences and learn new skills for managing caregiving duties.
The Foundation’s efforts to promote greater awareness of Alzheimer's disease and caregiving challenges extend beyond local communities. Through the Black ADRD Collective, a national collaboration of organizations, the Foundation seeks to unify and amplify resources for Black and Brown individuals affected by dementia. By fostering partnerships and sharing resources, the Collective aims to break down barriers in dementia care and improve outcomes for families nationwide.
Changing the Narrative of Caregiving
The James M. Dixon Foundation’s commitment to Alzheimer’s research and caregiving support is complemented by its ongoing efforts to reshape the caregiving narrative. Through storytelling, educational publications, and media outreach, the Foundation aims to provide visibility to the often-overlooked emotional, physical, and financial toll caregiving can take on families.
Dr. Lori has authored the 1000 Minute Rule for Caregivers, a book that offers practical advice and strategies for caregivers to manage their time and reduce burnout. The Foundation’s media efforts also include the Bedtime Stories Podcast, which provides soothing book readings for seniors to help them establish calming bedtime routines.
“We are passionate about changing the way Alzheimer’s care is perceived,” says Dr. Lori. “By sharing real stories and providing caregivers with the tools they need, we hope to normalize conversations about memory loss and create a culture of empathy and support.”
A Vision for the Future
Looking ahead, the James M. Dixon Foundation remains committed to driving positive change and making a measurable impact. By focusing on underserved communities and providing culturally responsive care, the Foundation aims to ensure that families from all backgrounds have access to the resources they need to navigate Alzheimer’s disease with dignity and support.
In addition to the many initiatives already underway, the Foundation is also preparing for its annual Purple Affair fundraising gala, which will take place on August 17, 2025, at the Georgia Aquarium. The Purple Affair is a significant event that raises both awareness and crucial funds to continue The Foundation’s initiatives, provide scholarships, and increase support for caregivers. More information on this highly anticipated event and how to participate can be found at The Purple Affair 2025.
The Foundation has already achieved significant milestones, such as hosting the Annual Intentional Caregiver Luncheon Workshop, which brings together over 100 caregivers for a day of resources, learning, and networking.
