Kansas City plumbing services companies, such as John the Plumber, comment on the new residential water heater efficiency standards and how it will affect KC homeowners.

-- With the Biden administration having finalized energy efficiency standards for residential water heaters, select Kansas City area plumbing services companies - including local favorite John the Plumber - have been chiming in on the update, the first to be made to the standards since 2010.
“Though we’re in the final period of the Biden administration, we still felt it prudent to mention that this water heater rule is poised to result in over 50-percent of the newly-manufactured electric storage water heaters to utilize heat pump technology, compared to the three-percent today,” states John the Plumber’s John Hunt. “According to our research, the Department of Energy estimates that the new rule, set to go into effect in 2029, will save consumers $124 billion over 30 years of shipments, and will apply to gas and oil-fired heaters as well as larger electric storage water heaters.”

Plumber experts like Hunt note that the water heater rule is the latest in a flurry of appliance efficiency standards to come from the Biden administration over the latter part of its tenure, including the gas stoves efficiency threshold and requirements for residential clothes washers/dryers finalized by the DOE, as well as a final rule on residential refrigerators and freezers. What’s more, it’s reported that the finalized residential water heater standards have strong industry and stakeholder support, will accelerate the deployment of heat pump water heaters and represent the largest energy-savings action by the appliance standards program in history.
“We’d be in support of any mandate that saved American households approximately $7.6 billion per year on their energy and water bills, while significantly cutting energy waste and harmful carbon pollution,” adds Hunt. “The final standards for residential water heaters align with recommendations from various stakeholders, including efficiency and environmental advocates, the Consumer Federation of America and a leading U.S. water heater manufacturer. We’ve been busy telling our customers all about how the standards would require the most common-sized electric water heaters to achieve efficiency gains with heat pump technology, helping to accelerate the deployment of this cost-effective, clean energy technology while also reducing strain on the electric grid.
“Based on the numbers we’ve looked at, these updated standards - over 30 years of shipments - are expected to save Americans $124 billion on their energy bills and reduce some 332 million metric tons of dangerous carbon dioxide emissions, equivalent to the combined annual emissions of nearly 43 million homes.”
Kansas City plumber Hunt says that water heating is responsible for roughly 13-percent of both annual residential energy use and consumer utility costs, with these new standards providing a savings of 10-percent of this usage relative to products currently on the market.
