An online resource specialising in information about UK disability benefits has developed an automated agent that answers common inquiries about eligibility.

According to a representative from Justice for Employees with Disabilities, the agent was primarily developed to answer FAQs on Access to Work, but it can also address misconceptions about the programme, such as misconceptions about eligibility. "Many mistakenly believe that earnings affect eligibility or that one has to pay back the grant at some point," they said. "The problem with believing such things is, of course, eligible beneficiaries failing to obtain the benefits they are entitled to."
"In response, we've decided to put technology to good use by creating a resource that is accessible for anyone with a mobile device," they added.
To use the agent, users need only to provide a query and give a comment in response to the agent's clarifying questions. The chatbot is capable of asking probing questions to better understand the nature of the user’s disability and the options available to them.
Access to Work is the UK government's programme designed to help citizens with physical disabilities or mental health conditions "stay in work". Through the programme, one may ask for a grant to pay for specialist equipment, support workers such as an interpreter, the cost of travelling to work, and more.
According to the UK government's official guidance, one's income does not affect eligibility and other existing benefits. The government does not expect the sum to be returned and will refund any upfront payment incurred by either the applicant or their employer.
