The residential clinic is pleased to be better supporting teens who are living with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or who have another trauma disorder; whether it is born of a single traumatic incident or of complex trauma.
In developing their new inpatient and outpatient programs, Mission Prep is responding to the rise in PTSD and trauma in young people. As the National Center for PTSD recently reported, today, between 15 and 43% of girls and 14 and 43% of boys go through at least one trauma, with 3 to 15% of those girls and 1 to 6% of those boys going on to develop PTSD.
Mission Prep has seen this rise in PTSD among teens, both as a concomitant part of conditions like anxiety and depression, and as a standalone mental health condition. As such, they are committed to offering holistic trauma-informed care to teens in Los Angeles and surrounding areas.
In addition to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, the benchmark for talk therapy, the center also offers teens with trauma Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), which has been positively associated with a notable reduction in the intensity of the traumatic memories linked to PTSD.
They now also offer somatic therapies, like trauma-informed yoga classes, which help to calm the physiological response of the body to traumatic memories. Plus, they can provide a range of experiential therapies, like equine, music and art therapy, which are all designed to help teens process their trauma and release their painful feelings and memories through structured cathartic expression.
All of Mission Prep’s treatments will also be tailored to the needs of the individual teen, and as a residential center, they can give round-the-clock support to teenagers whose trauma has left them particularly vulnerable.
Like all of their care programs, the center’s trauma and PTSD treatment plans are also imbued with a genuine sense of hope, and a desire to empower, uplift and nurture teens.
“Our approach is strengths-based and resilience-focused, with the goal of helping our clients separate themselves from their traumatic experiences,” said a spokesperson for Mission Prep’s clinical team. “We want them to understand that their trauma is not their identity and that they have the power to navigate through it.”
They added, “We help our clients build skills and tools to cope with their PTSD and move forward in a healthy way, ensuring their long-term success in recovering from trauma.”
