Rear Projection Driving studio offers a cost-effective way to film driving scenes

NORTH HOLLYWOOD, Calif. - March 5, 2025 - Rear Projection Driving, a new studio facility in North Hollywood, California, is bringing back “old-school” rear screen projection to enable productions to save money and improve safety on driving scenes. By updating the rear screen projection technique with modern computerization and digital effects, Rear Projection Driving is able to simulate realistic driving without the vehicle moving anywhere. The company is working with networks like Warner Bros, Tubi, and Prime Video.

“Rear screen projection, which was a staple of movies and TV from the 1920s on, had become dated, the stuff of spoofs like we saw in ‘Airplane,’ but no more,” explained Waymon Boone, President of Rear Projection Driving. “With our fully synced, digital laser rear screens, you get ultra-realistic driving effects without having to get out on the road and deal with all that comes with that process. We can even simulate rain and snow.”

Filming driving scenes in a practical setting is costly and, despite advances in safety, dangerous. The process requires renting trailers and specialized camera rigs, getting permits, and hiring police escorts. And, even in the best conditions, lighting and sound are significant challenges with on-the-street filming. Modern rear-screen projection solves these problems.

It also gets rid of difficulties with green screen spill and eliminates any and all post-production work, making it the simple and cost-effective way to achieve the ultimate goal in-camera visual effects (ICVFX).

Actors are showing a strong preference for the rear screen approach, too, as it enables them to perform in a comfortable, controlled setting. Artists like Green Day and Ice Cube have utilized the Rear Projection Driving studio to film driving scenes. “The talent is concerned with just one thing, delivering a performance,” Boone added. “This system does that for them, making it a lot easier than being dragged around the city with cameras stuck in car windows while traffic is honking. Plus, this system is a fraction of the costs compared to renting an LED Wall Volume Stage in Los Angeles and doesn’t have any common camera moiré problems that LED walls can sometimes have.”

Rear Projection Driving created a new premium 4k library of driving plates, building their own custom 9- camera 4k library of driving plates, building their own custom 9-camera 4k driving rig to capture the world around us. This saves productions a tremendous amount of money by also offering the driving plates for free with each studio rental, making it a fantastic plug-and-play, one-stop-shop with zero post- production needed. The studio is available for feature films, television series, commercials, web series, music videos, industrials and more.
