Texas Original Announces Support for Senate Bill 1505

SB 1505 proposes strong improvements to the Texas Compassionate Use Act and patients’ ability to access safe, high-quality medical cannabis throughout the state

Texas Original, Texas’ leading medical cannabis provider, today announced its support of Texas Senate Bill 1505. The bill, which was heard by the Senate Committee on State Affairs on March 3, 2025, proposes amendments to the Texas Compassionate Use Program (CUP) that would improve patient access to medical cannabis.

Under the CUP, Texans with a variety of conditions are eligible for a medical cannabis prescription, including spasticity, neuropathy, PTSD, cancer, epilepsy and hundreds of neurodegenerative disorders. SB 1505 would make a number of improvements to the program, including:

  • Allowing for satellite locations where medicine can be stored, improving patient access and reducing medicine costs.
  • Approving the use of aerosol or vapor as a means of administration of low-THC cannabis when medically necessary. These medical products offer immediate relief, which is critical for patients with episodic conditions such as PTSD.
  • Aligning dosing with other prescription medications by capping THC by milligrams instead of by weight. This will reduce unnecessary filler ingredients in the medicine and allow for more delivery methods.

“Senate Bill 1505 proposes crucial improvements to the Compassionate Use Program that will benefit patients throughout the state,” said Nico Richardson, CEO of Texas Original. “We are grateful to Senator Charles Perry for his meaningful amendments. These changes will make the program more accessible and bring relief to the patients who rely on it for their medical care.”

McKinney, Texas-based mother Erica Olenski turned to Texas Original’s medical cannabis when her 6-year-old son faced a daunting recurrence of brain cancer. When his condition was determined to be inoperable, Erica’s family looked for a medication that would work in tandem with his radiation therapy and address a life-threatening vomiting syndrome that had developed as a consequence of his prior treatments.

“I am so grateful to have a safe way to obtain this medication in Texas,” Erica said. “I’m not going to give anything to my son that isn’t rigorously tested—I know I can trust what is offered through the Compassionate Use Program. Our story highlights not just a personal victory for my son and our family but also underscores the potential of medical cannabis as a crucial component in treating serious, life-threatening medical conditions while preserving quality of life, something that is non-negotiable for us at this point in his treatment plan.”

Texans can obtain medical cannabis prescriptions through online clinics or local physicians registered with the Compassionate Use Registry of Texas. To learn more about whether you or a loved one qualify for medical cannabis, visit the Texas Original website.
