Journalism became her passion as a result, and she worked full-time in Hawaii's top-rated broadcast newsroom after graduation.
A Legacy of Leadership and Service
One of Ms. Dela Cruz's notable roles was as the press secretary to U.S. Sen. Daniel Akaka of Hawaii from 2004 to 2007. She was the director of public affairs for the Bishop Museum in Hawaii, the premier natural and cultural history museum in the state and served as deputy director of communications for the State of Hawaii Governor Neil Abercrombie until 2012. She went on to be the director of communications for the Hawaii State Department of Education. Additionally, from 2018 to 2021, she was a senior vice president for the consulting firm Strategies 360.
Ms. Dela Cruz holds positions on multiple boards, including Child & Family Service, RiseHI, the Daniel K. Akaka Family Foundation, and the University of Hawaii Alumni Association. She is a passionate advocate of protecting and promoting Hawaii's native culture and resources.
Throughout her career, Ms. Dela Cruz has continuously proved her abilities. She was included in the PBN 40 Under 40 list in 2009 and her community work was acknowledged when she was awarded the Volunteer of the Year by the American Cancer Society in 2011. In 2012, she was selected to be in the inaugural cohort of Omidyar Fellows. Furthermore, in 2025 she was named among the PBN's Women Who Mean Business.
