Changes in Federal Prison Facilities Highlight Need for Informed Advocacy

Today, the Federal Bureau of Prisons (FBOP) announced the closure of several facilities, including the Federal Prison Camps located in Duluth, Minnesota; Oxford, Wisconsin; Littleton, Colorado; Loretto, Pennsylvania; Morgantown, West Virginia; and Pensacola, Florida. These closures are in addition to the earlier announcement regarding the women’s prison in Dublin, California.

Due to shifts within the Federal Bureau of Prisons, it is now more critical than ever for inmates and individuals entering the justice system to seek accurate and comprehensive information about their placement options.

With these closures and changes, Federal Prison Consultant Sam Mangel, noted that “federal prison camps were already facing a crisis level of overcrowding. With these closures, the situation will only get worse, resulting in longer wait times for inmates to participate in the RDAP drug abuse program and other classes that help inmates reduce their sentences.”

With the movement of inmates and staff to other institutions, individuals facing incarceration must be proactive in advocating for their best outcomes.

Why Preparation for Incarceration Matters

  • Facility Placement: With the closure of certain facilities, it is essential to understand where individuals may be relocated. Proximity to family and support systems can significantly impact an inmate's rehabilitation process.

  • Program Availability: Many inmates benefit from programs such as the Residential Drug Abuse Program (RDAP). Knowing which facilities offer these programs can help individuals advocate for placement in institutions that provide the support they need.

  • Navigating Changes: As the FBOP restructures its operations, staying informed about policy changes and available resources is vital for effective advocacy.
