What’s in the boot. Important tools to keep in your vehicle’s boot in the case of an emergency

Every vehicle should have an emergency supply kit in the boot of their car. It’s best to check this every six months and expired items should be replaced.

Chris Lett, Australian tyre recycler and owner of Branigans tyres discusses the importance of keeping tools and supplies in the vehicle in the case of an emergency.

“Start with having emergency phone numbers, such as insurance companies, towing companies, and emergency services handy in case of an emergency and immediate assistance is required,” says Lett.

A car charger is a necessary item and is something that is often overlooked. Keeping your phone charged can be vital if there is an emergency.

Having a rain poncho or umbrella in the car can be useful if roadside repairs need to be undertaken or if you need to walk for assistance in heavy rain.

Fires are an issue that require immediate response, and having a fire extinguisher on hand can help douse early flames. However, it is imperative that using a fire extinguisher should only be undertaken if safe. It is better to leave the vehicle quickly and wait for the experts.

A roll of duct tape goes along way if something decides to break or fall out of place. Repair if possible and then make your way to your nearest mechanic.

A reflective vest is a vital addition to the tool kit. There have been many deaths in Australia where someone working on a car on the side of the road has been killed. A reflective vest can help someone to be spotted, especially if it is dark or a dull day. Reflective triangles placed inside the bonnet or boot of the car are also a good idea.

Jumper leads are a necessary item to have in the car. It’s amazing the amount of times someone has a dead battery.

A First Aid kit should always be on hand along with bottles of drinking water and non-perishable foods. These can come in handy if there is an accident or if broken down and help is a few hours away.

A multifaceted tool kit with a large flashlight and batteries and a multipurpose utility tool will definitely be useful in an emergency.

Always ensure the spare tyre, tripod jack and wheel wrench are inside the boot of the car. If a spare tyre has been used, it’s important that it is replaced as soon as possible.

“Some items are more important than others. However, being prepared for an emergency with the above items, will be of benefit should one occur,” says Lett. Keep an emergency tools checklist prepared, keep it updated and checked when required to best ensure one has what they need.
