“Alabama’s Front Porch” at The Lodge

Nicknamed “Alabama’s Front Porch,” this expansive Coast-facing sitting area is mere feet from the Gulf, has a guaranteed scenic view no matter where you are, and is accessible to all who stay at The Lodge.
During the day, you’ll be able to see the crashing waves and natural sand dunes, and you may even be able to spot some local critters to take a quick photo of. It’s also a fantastic place to grab some sunset snapshots under the warm glow of the surrounding sea turtle lights. With comfortable accommodations like tables and rocking chairs, it’s truly a picture-perfect place to take some one-of-a-kind photos to all who stay at The Lodge, or visit one of their four dining outlets.
Lake Shelby & Gulf State Park
If you are looking for a diverse location to have an outdoor photo shoot, look no further than the natural splendor of Lake Shelby and Gulf State Park. Home to 28 miles of stunning hiking and biking trails, you won’t travel far before breaking out the camera to take a snap of the park’s interesting geography, biome, plant life, or wildlife.
For an even wilder perspective, you can rent a kayak or paddleboard to explore all that Lake Shelby has to offer. Not only is it a fun and exceptional experience, but it’s sure to be a unique backdrop for any photos you may want to grab along the way. Don’t worry, there are also a few fishing piers where you can get a lake and park viewpoint without the risk of getting wet.
The Sculptures of Barber Marina
For some photo ops that are truly out of the ordinary, you may want to make your way 20 minutes north to Barber Marina. In this neck of the woods, you’ll run into some captivating and quirky sculptures, like dinosaurs and an authentic Italian Renaissance Neptune’s Fountain, among other oddities, from a giant spider to a floating woman known as the Lady in the Lake.
Constructed by fiberglass artist Mark Cline and commissioned by Alabama businessman George Barber, these works of art are sights to behold. Especially considering there is even a full-scale replica of the prehistoric wonder Stonehenge; only this one is called “Bamahenge,” of course. Trust us, this is a roadside attraction that is worth bringing out the camera for.
The Perch Patio
Searching for the perfect vacation pic with a beautiful cocktail in your hand? There are few spots that come close to the elevated elegance of Perch at Gulf State Park. Up above the dunes, you’ll discover one of the best views of our incredible Gulf Coast sunset, just be sure to make a reservation!
Out on the patio, you’ll also find firepits and a lounge area that is prime for special occasions and scenic snapshots. Plus, if you’re a foodie, you’ll be in picture paradise as Perch serves delicious, eye-catching dishes and cocktails that are sure to fill up your stomach and your camera roll.
Gulf State Pier
There’s no better way to immerse yourself in Gulf Coast culture than by visiting the Gulf State Pier. With the first 725 feet open to sightseers and anglers, you will discover views of our sugar-white sands and sunsets anywhere along the Gulf Coast.
If you like to fish, you may even be able to grab a photo of the next greatest Gulf catch as you cast off and reel in a big one!
The pier is currently closed for renovations. It is scheduled to reopen to the public around Labor Day (September 2, 2024).
