NEW YORK - March 13, 2026 - PRLog -- New York, NY – After 37 years of visionary leadership, the Dominican Women's Development Center (DWDC)—a national leader in empowering immigrant women—is entering a new chapter. During Women's History Month, the Washington Heights-based nonprofit announced the appointment of Marielys Divanne as its new Executive Director.
The transition marks a milestone for the organization as co-founder and pioneering Executive Director Rosita M. Romero steps down after nearly four decades of service. Under Romero's leadership, DWDC grew from a grassroots group in a local church into the largest independent Dominican-founded nonprofit in the U.S.
"Marielys has my full blessings. I believe we made the best possible choice," said Rosita M. Romero, Executive Director Emeritus. "She brings a unique combination of nonprofit leadership and grassroots organizing. I am confident she will elevate the organization with her vision and passion."
Marielys Divanne, a first-generation college graduate born in the Dominican Republic, brings over 25 years of experience in education equity and social justice. She previously served as Executive Director of Educators for Excellence New York and as Senior Advisor to the NYC Deputy Mayor for Strategic Initiatives.
"Stepping into this role is both a profound honor and deeply personal," said Marielys Divanne. "At a moment when many immigrant families are navigating uncertainty, organizations like DWDC matter more than ever. My commitment is to strengthen what works and expand partnerships so even more families can find the support they need to thrive."
Local officials praised the appointment and recognized DWDC's role as a cornerstone of Northern Manhattan.
"I am confident Marielys will continue moving the organization forward," said Congressman Adriano Espaillat. Assemblymember Manny De Los Santos added, "Her leadership will help continue DWDC's powerful legacy of uplifting women and creating opportunities for the next generation." Council Member Carmen De La Rosa also welcomed the news, stating, "We look forward to working alongside Marielys for the betterment of our community."
DWDC continues to provide vital services including the Nuevo Amanecer domestic violence program, Mamá Tingó Early Head Start, ESL classes, and La Sala for LGBTQ youth. As it enters this new era, the center remains dedicated to its founding mission: ensuring immigrant women have access to safety, dignity, and opportunity.
