Each year the $1,000 merit-based scholarship is awarded to the winner of a 2,000-word essay contest. This year's topic was, "Understanding the importance of bettering yourself." Students were asked to discuss why self-improvement and character development are vital, ways they can grow and build themselves, and how to utilize their strengths and talents in the process.
This year's winner, Maddie Helm, shared glimpses of her incredible life's story and the tenacity that helped her to overcome her challenges. Madeline wrote that the core of self-improvement and character development is stepping out of one's comfort zone, whatever it may be, to engage life's opportunities, even when these opportunities present as unexpected obstacles. By helping those less fortunate, Maddie has gained the sensitivity and clarity that her life's purpose is to help others. To this end, she is currently pursuing a master's in Integrative Nutrition at the National University of Natural Medicine in Portland, Oregon, with the hope of helping others with health issues. Her mission is to make a difference and plans to draw upon her entrepreneurial spirit to start a company to guide others who want to improve their lives and better themselves.
