WSU and UW Alums Launch ALS Apple Cup Challenge in Support of Team Gleason and People Living With ALS

WSU alum Steve Gleason and UW alum Phil Green challenge each other and their alma maters to raise the most funds in the first annual event

SEATTLE - November 6, 2019 - (Newswire.com)

University of Washington alum Phil Green, who is living with ALS, has challenged Washington State University alum Steve Gleason in an effort to prove which fan base can raise more money for Team Gleason and people living with ALS. Steve Gleason, who is also living with the disease, accepted the challenge and the ALS Apple Cup Challenge was born. The competition will end on Nov. 29 at the annual Boeing Apple Cup Series football game between the two rivals in Seattle.

“While Steve Gleason is one of my heroes and I have no doubt he can rally WSU supporters, I believe UW fans will rise to the challenge and we will be victorious in this effort,” said Phil Green. “It will be fun to win, but the importance is in how much we can raise to help all those Team Gleason supports. Go Huskies!”

A web site, https://www.applecupalschallenge.com/ was created and nearly $8,000 has been raised of the $100,000 goal through the site. All funds will go to support Team Gleason’s ongoing work to help those living with ALS through technology, equipment, support, care, and adventures.

“I've lived purposefully and productively with ALS for almost nine years,” said Steve Gleason. “These years have included some extreme challenges. I've only been able to triumphantly overcome these challenges because of help from an amazing support team,” he added. “Tens of thousands of other people face the same extreme life and death challenges. Those people need your support.”

Gleason continued, “I've always known the Cougar Nation to face challenges with fierce resilience. If you've been inspired by my story over the past nine years, join me to secure this win over UW and ALS. Go Cougs! No White Flags.”

The winning school will be acknowledged at the game, Nov. 29, receive a unique award, and know they provided critical funds and assistance for people living with ALS.
