The Toronto, Ontario based Waldorf Academy is pleased to announce that they have been successful in providing a nurturing school environment as their students find their gender identity. The school is constantly looking for new ways to revolutionize the field of education with their own unique approach to, and treatment of, transgender and non-binary children.

The Waldorf Academy Toronto is well known in the community for their wide acceptance and support towards their transgender and non-binary students. The academy has been dedicated to the inclusion and equal treatment of all of the children under their tutoring.

Recently, the Toronto school published a report titled ‘How Does Waldorf Academy Treat Transgender And Non-Binary Children?’ on their website. The report primarily touches on a number of common concerns that parents have once they realise they need to locate an inclusive school for their children to attend, but also discussed other matters that may be relevant to every parent, even if they don’t have a transgender or non-binary child.

The school talks about the different approaches that they take to help every student feel included. In the report, they state, “We believe they (Non-binary and transgender children) deserve the same dignity and care as any other student, but we also recognize they may have unique needs when compared with other students.”

The Toronto Waldorf school says that they owe their successful approach in this matter to their personnel, whom the school says, “Have been trained with the relevant resources needed to educate non-binary and transgender children.” This, along with a proactive relationship with their students that is complemented by regular conversations, has proved to be the most effective way to ensure that every child’s needs are met without exception.

The school stated that they abide by the ‘three golden rules’ that Rudolf Steiner, founder of Waldorf education, started back in 1922, which are: To receive the child in gratitude from the world they come from, to educate the child with love, and to lead the child into the true freedom to which they belong to.”

Every strategy that is put to practice by the Waldorf Academy has been proven to work, and is backed by the studies of doctors, and psychologists in the relevant field. This ensures that their students are educated in every aspect that may be pertinent to their special situation, and fulfilling of their individual needs. The school constantly updates the resources used to train their teachers in order to ensure that every educator stays up to date on the most recent studies in the topic.

The school declares that they’re devoted to help every student feel included, and that by leading the way to inclusion, they can only hope that other schools will follow their lead.

The most important matter to Waldorf Academy is the education of the teachers in the relevant subjects to the matter. A representative from the school is quoted as saying , “the reason teachers fail to meet the student’s needs is because most of them are not being provided with exposure to the resources that they need to educate transgender and non-binary students. Even amongst those who feel prepared to deal with these cases, the teachers have said they're prepared only because they have done their own research, and have taught themselves in the matter.”

This is a serious matter, as most teachers are accepting, and willing to help with the unique needs of students. The issue is that they are not being taught how to do it by their superiors. This puts the teachers in a difficult situation. With Waldorf’s Academy efforts in the matter, the school expects to raise awareness in the education industry, and hopefully, lead a true change in the industry.
