Palm Springs Modernism and Contemporary Architecture

By: Get News

Modernism Week 2020 in Palm Springs set a new record for attendance with 162,000 visitors, 375 events, and contributed $62 Million to the local economy. For domestic and international visitors, Modernism Week provides an opportunity to geek-out on iconic mid-century Palm Springs Modernism featuring notable architectural gems such as Richard Neutra’s Kaufmann Desert House and Albert Frey’s Cree House.

Palm-Springs

Palm Springs enjoys a reputation as a destination for architectural junkies, like myself, and a weekend retreat from the overcrowded major urban areas to the north.

The history of Palm Springs and the surrounding well-heeled communities of Rancho Mirage, and Indian Wells includes a reputation as the playground of the rich and famous with noteworthy celebrities, past U.S. Presidents, Hollywood movie stars, and mobsters. All of whom enjoyed their privacy and escape from the spotlight.

Following WWII, the Coachella Valley witnessed a surge in residential construction in the style known as Desert Modernism. The rise in interest in Palm Springs living provided unique opportunities for the Palm Springs architects mentioned above to express their vision with homes of white masonry walls, floor to ceiling glass, angled rooflines, and a seamless blend of indoor and outdoor entertainment.

Palm Springs has seen a resurgence of interest in real estate investments over the past decade. Interestingly, Bob Hope, a visionary of his own making and a resident of Palm Springs and Los Angeles, made a fortune by wisely investing in Palm Springs real estate. All for good reasons, Palm Springs offers an abundance of brilliant sunshine and warmth. Palm Springs sits atop a vast sea of groundwater, providing ample drinking water and green lawns; the aquifer is wisely managed and replenished with water from the Colorado River.

While Desert Modernism is the root of Palm Springs’s architectural history, it represents a glimpse into a period of architectural style influenced by Frank Lloyd Wright, Mies van der Rohe, and Los Angeles architects Pierre Koenig.

As the new visionary architect of Palm Springs, RNA creates homes with sculptural forms and unexpected layouts. We take our inspiration from the philosopher Jacques Derrida, and contemporary architects such as Herzog & de Meuron and Peter Eisenman. RNA’s architectural sensibility includes European influenced design, sustainable architecture, energy-efficient design, and sensitivity to the surroundings.

Palm Springs, with its rich, unmistakable architectural heritage, has always embraced a forward-thinking design vision. New residential enclaves, such as Desert Palisades, provide an extraordinary canvas for architectural expression and promise a fresh perspective from Palm Springs, South Florida and Beverly Hills architects while setting a new standard of excellence in world-class contemporary design. RNA has designed its version of The Glass House with a nod to the boulder-strewn desert landscape, and panoramic mountain views, a seamless integration of inside-outside living, the very image of leisure and relaxation.
