Mike McCarthy, acclaimed author and lifelong Yooper, announces the release of his newest book, Great Storytellers of the Upper Peninsula, Part I, a powerful tribute to the people and narratives that define Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. This compelling new work marks McCarthy’s fifth book and opens a planned series dedicated to preserving the region’s rich oral history and cultural legacy.
Great Storytellers of the Upper Peninsula, Part I takes readers on a vivid journey through the Eastern Upper Peninsula, where storytelling is more than entertainment. It is a way of life. Drawing on deep regional roots shaped by Canadian, Scandinavian, and Native American influences, McCarthy highlights how stories have long served as the glue that binds UP communities together.
The book profiles remarkable individuals whose voices and contributions helped shape the Eastern UP, including Bernie Arbic, the foremost writer and historian of Sault Ste. Marie; Francis Frank Talentino, known as the King of Infrastructure whose work helped bring electricity to the region; and Reverend Peter Campbell, a gifted orator and historian of Sault Ste. Marie’s storied hockey tradition.
Through these engaging portraits, McCarthy underscores the importance of local voices in preserving history, fostering empathy, and strengthening community identity. The book stands as both a celebration and a record of a uniquely American heritage that continues to thrive through the spoken word.
This release builds on McCarthy’s established body of work, which includes My Road to Sobriety, The Sounds & Smells of My Childhood Part I, The Sounds & Smells of My Childhood Part II, and Songs & Stories From A Canadian Yooper. With Great Storytellers of the Upper Peninsula, Part I, McCarthy continues his mission to honor personal stories that resonate far beyond regional borders.
Great Storytellers of the Upper Peninsula, Part I will be available at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Ingram Spark and Scriptor House. Readers interested in history, culture, and authentic American storytelling are encouraged to order their copy.
