Environmentally friendliness in the metal sector – the ColibrisODM solution

By: Get News

ColibrisODM, on-demand manufacturing company, that develops and implements innovations in the metal manufacturing industry, has taken the bold step to become a climate-neutral company, even though it operates in one of the most polluting manufacturing sectors. “We are the first company in the metal sector in Lithuania to operate without polluting the environment at all. We are probably the first company to have adopted a plan for net zero in Europe, but that is not the most important thing – we are just glad that every order made through our platform will be environmentally friendly,” says Justinas Bielskis, CEO at ColibrisODM.

ColibrisODM offers a value proposition for metal manufacturing companies – especially the small ones – an advanced and low-cost solution. Here suppliers such as metal manufacturing companies can order custom-made parts online in a few clicks.

“While working in the metal processing industry, we have noticed that there are no companies in this sector which operate without generating pollution. We have decided to conduct an audit to calculate our CO₂ footprint and to compensate for our activities across the entire value chain in 2021. We are determined to conduct the audit annually, and to implement an action plan every year,” says J. Bielskis.

Planting new trees and forests to reduce pollution

In 2021, ColibrisODM’s carbon footprint was 118t CO2e, according to an audit conducted by Planet Positive. The acquisition of raw materials, transportation and metal processing were the largest contributors.

Together with ColibrisODM, they have found a solution that is acceptable to everyone – the company has joined a non-governmental initiative, public enterprise “Myliu Miska,” the aim of which is to extend Lithuanian forests and decrease the amount of CO₂ in the atmosphere. In order to achieve the company goal to minimize its negative impact on environment and to set an example for the rest of the industry, ColibrisODM has offset all emissions by planting 637 trees. The initiators of public enterprise “Myliu Miska” will take care of these trees until they become a forest, – explains Migle Makuskaite, a co-founder of “PlanetPosivite” and a certified greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting specialist and carbon-neutral business consultant.

Steel production accounts for 8% of total global CO₂ emissions. In Europe, the steel industry accounts for 25% of greenhouse gas emissions in the industrial sector. Emissions from steel production must be reduced for industry to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 and for countries to deliver on the commitments made in the Paris Agreement. “For some companies, it could be a major challenge,” climate change experts say.

Recent international studies show that the global, and especially European, steel industry is under increasing pressure to reduce its carbon footprint. This is due to growing investor and public interest in sustainability, the tightening of carbon emission regulations, and the provisions of the European Green Deal.

Developing an algorithm for customers

J. Bielskis says that the green development pathway chosen by the company will soon be available to the company’s customers. ColibrisODM has integrated an artificial intelligence tool that allows customers to place an order in a matter of minutes – choosing a metal product of the desired technical parameters and quantity. A simple check mark will be shown in this ordering algorithm to indicate that a product is carbon neutral. “At the time of ordering, the customer will be able to choose it and the emissions generated during the production process will be compensated by a certain number of trees planted. The extra charge will depend on the number of trees needed to offset unavoidable emissions,” explains J. Bielskis.

According to the CEO of ColibrisODM, the company’s efforts to compensate for pollution are not accidental: “It is a natural sequence of actions to minimize our impact on the planet. We are an advanced company with both the tools we offer and the concept that allows us to employ the available capacities of small metal processing companies in Lithuania.”

Unique model

ColibrisODM operates according to a unique model that allows small-sized Lithuanian manufacturers to accept orders from all over the world. According to J. Bielskis, there are hundreds of small metal processing companies in Lithuania that have capacity available. Since smaller machine shops depend on a small number of local customers, keeping their machines running at capacity could lead to high costs. “The tool we offer allows small businesses to get orders at no extra cost. When we receive an order on the ColibrisODM platform, we identify the best technology to manufacture the custom-made component, and then match them with the best manufacturer based on production capacity, batch size, delivery time, technical parameters, skill set, and cost. The supplier receives a clear 3D technical drawing and other necessary information. After confirmation, the manufacturing process starts”, says J. Bielskis.
