Dr. Shin's career in medicine grew out of a health crisis she experienced as a child. She was only four years old when she had to undergo open-heart surgery in South Korea, an experience that ignited her interest in the medical field.
Later, when she was finishing her fellowship at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Dr. Shin was diagnosed with breast cancer. Like other patients, she faced challenges navigating the medical system, making appointments and scheduling her surgery. This experience shaped her approach to dealing with patients and deepened her understanding of their struggles.
Helping Improve the Lives of Those With Epilepsy
Dr. Shin takes great pride in establishing epilepsy programs and helping those with the condition gain a better quality of life. Her commitment to her patients has resulted in their being able to better control their seizures, freeing them to pursue their personal goals.
Dr. Shin was specifically recruited to build the epilepsy program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She did so in collaboration with a surgeon, and the final result of their teamwork has greatly benefited the patients who enter the program. Due to her success, she was asked by the University of New Mexico School of Medicine to revamp its epilepsy program as well.
Within a year, Dr. Shin made significant changes that were acknowledged with heartfelt thanks from her patients and their families. She plans to replicate these previous successes in her current position.
The Importance of Strong Leadership
Dr. Shin's experience working with others has shaped her views on leadership. She actively advocates on behalf of her employees and advises others to do the same to create opportunities for success for all stakeholders. Her exceptional leadership skills are evident in the epilepsy programs she has spearheaded.
Dr. Shin's advice to her residents is to "be open-minded and embrace yourself. If you work hard, you can be successful."
Although Dr. Shin is a hard worker, she strives for a balanced life and encourages her staff to do the same.
The Evolving World of Health Care
Dr. Shin notes that health care is constantly undergoing change and experiencing trends that alter the industry. She notes that when she was attending medical school, a practitioner's role was rather straightforward, but since then, many subspecialties have emerged, impacting the industry significantly. Neurology, in particular, she says, has rapidly evolved and now includes several subspecialties.
She points to this development as one of the trends that has had a notable impact.
"The science behind it is a very rapidly evolving science and we are learning so many new things," says Dr. Shin. "It can be daunting because this is a very complex industry."
In the future, Dr. Shin plans to expand her existing department and establish a comprehensive neurology department with various subspecialties to better serve her patients.
