Cameco Reports Operation of Boroo Gold Mine Temporarily Suspended by Centerra
Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, June 14, 2006 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Cameco Corporation reports that Centerra Gold Inc. announced today that it has temporarily suspended operations at its Boroo gold mine in Mongolia as a precaution in response to political demonstrations at the minesite.
Cameco owns 53% of Centerra Gold which operates and owns 95% of the Boroo gold mine.
About 100 protesters staged a demonstration at the Boroo minesite today. The demonstrators represent the Popular Party, a small Mongolian political party that has recently been criticized by the Mongolian cabinet for its statements with respect to the Boroo mine.
The Mongolian cabinet stated that Boroo conducts its operations in accordance with Mongolian law and that the demands of the Popular Party are illegitimate and unconstitutional.
Centerra has a history of co-operative relations with the Government of Mongolia and intends to work closely with police and governmental officials to ensure the prompt resumption of normal mine operations.
Centerra is a growth-oriented, gold company focused on acquiring, exploring, developing and operating gold properties primarily in Central Asia, the former Soviet Union and other emerging markets. Centerra is a leading North American gold producer and the largest Western-based gold producer in Central Asia and the former Soviet Union. Centerra’s shares trade on the Toronto Stock Exchange under the symbol CG. The company is based in Toronto, Canada.
Cameco, with its head office in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, is the world’s largest uranium producer. The company’s uranium products are used to generate electricity in nuclear energy plants around the world, providing one of the cleanest sources of energy available today. Cameco’s shares trade on the Toronto and New York stock exchanges.
